Eau de Parfum or Eau de Toilette? - Fragrance Concentration Guide

The descriptions we see on perfume bottles - Eau de Toilette to Eau de Parfum - are used to identify the strength or concentration of oil in the base (which is usually alcohol) of the fragrances within the perfume.

In this easy guide we will explain the different variations of fragrance concentrations which will help you decide the intensity and longevity of the scent in the type of perfume you're looking for.

Generally, the higher percentage of the concentration of oil in the base of the perfume, the stronger it will be and it will last longer.
We say generally because some notes within a fragrance composition are naturally more potent than others (imagine the varying strengths between smoky oud wood and watery marine notes for example).

The variations of perfumes and their percentages can be see below.

The variations' approximate scent durations are;
  • Eau Fraiche - Up to 2 hours
  • Aftershave/Splash/Cologne - Between 2 to 3 hours
  • Eau de Toilette - 3 to 4 hours
  • Eau de Parfum - 4 to 5 hours
  • Perfume/Parfum - 4 to 6 hours
  • Extract/Extrait/Solid Perfume - 6 to 8 hours

How To Layer Your Scents Throughout The Day

Why not begin your day with a refreshing splash of Cologne, such as this fresh, woody fragrance here and then spray a similar scented Eau de Toilette ready for your day with a matching or un-scented body lotion which will help the fragrance longevity

As the evening gets under way, consider a spritz of Eau de Parfum (this one will match and compliment your earlier choice of fragrances) that will be sure to last as long as your night out does.

If you're looking to impress well into the night, dabbing on a Parfum or Extrait will tempt until the next day due to it's intensity. However, the intensity doesn't necessarily mean that the scent will project far, it means that those you allow to get close enough to you will enjoy all the alluring aromas for a longer amount of time!
